Hamied Haroon

“Your enthusiasm and academic abilities are what matter, regardless of physical impairment.”
Haroon was born in Manchester, UK in the 1970s. As a child, Haroon was diagnosed with Charcot Marie Tooth Disease—a condition in which the body’s peripheral nerves deteriorate. Haroon was placed in a separate school for children with disabilities but quickly outperformed the school’s standards. Haroon would attend a regular secondary school and discovered a passion for medicine. However, his school’s career services told him he could not pursue medicine due to his disabilities. Haroon would eventually discover the field of medical physics in college and purse a BS in physics. Haroon obtained his MS and PhD in medical physics at the University of Manchester. Haroon is now a professor of biology at the University of Manchester. His research helped advance MRI technology to replace invasive brain microscopy. His work improves MRI analysis for brain scans. He has also established the first National Association of Disabled Staff Network in the UK.
